Support Your Immunity With Good Nutrition
Each year, the winter months are marked by a dip in the nation’s immune system and the onset of seasonal illnesses from the common cold to debilitating flu. What few people realise however, is that you can support your body’s built-in defenses, simply via the foods you eat. Here, Susan Bowerman, MS, RD, CSSD shares her top tips on staying healthy this winter.
Most people know they should be eating more protein, but did you know your protein intake also affects your body’s capability to fight illness?
“Your immune system has ‘special forces’ in the form of white blood cells which produce specialised proteins, called antibodies, to seek out and destroy invading viruses and bacteria,” explains Bowerman. As the body requires protein to manufacture these antibodies, high-protein foods such as fish, soy products and low-fat dairy can help to boost immunity.
FRUIT & VEG
The health benefits of fruit and vegetables are well-known worldwide, but when it comes to immunity, they are a powerhouse of goodness.
“The phytonutrients (natural compounds in plant foods) in fruit and vegetables help to promote health by serving as antioxidants,”
Bowerman reveals. “The body relies on a steady source of antioxidants to reduce oxidative stress, which helps to support immune function.”
Moving onto digestion, Bowerman states, “Your digestive tract is home to trillions of bacteria with numerous functions in promoting health. Some help digest fibre, consume intestinal gas, or produce vitamins such as K and B12.” Having more good bacteria in your system means they can ‘crowd out’ any harmful bacteria that enters the digestive tract; thereby protecting you from illness. Cultured dairy products such as yogurt and kefir are Bowerman’s recommendations as some of the best sources of these friendly bacteria.
“Eating well really does pave the road to good health,” concludes Bowerman. “To help your body in the fight against foreign invaders, your internal ‘army’ needs the best nutrition possible.”
